Convert many Canoes, Kayaks and Small dinghies into sailboats with the addition of this one drop in rig. It supports both the mast and a leeboard. Everything can be removed except the mast step allowing the boat to remain uncluttered. I profile two owners who have had the same drop in rig on several different boats each. Sails are available too.
The above photo was taken on the third day of our Canoeing trip on the Loire River in France. The two black canoes didn’t even exist a week ago. When I wrote the original article on Disposable Canoeing I had no idea at all what it would lead to me and a bunch of adventurers, wine and cheese connoisseurs. Most of us didn’t even know each other! The picture above is the result of this adventurism, but what happened to make it happen? What technology was involved to make the boats faster to build than most stitch and glue boats and what weather conditions did we have to overcome to make it all happen.
This page compares the two plywood canoes in my range. Both have detailed plans and are simple to build. The page is to explain the differences and to help potential builders see if one of the boats suits their needs.Lots of links to pictures, build articles and even videos. The cla

The Drop in Outriggers can provide stability for many canoes kayaks and narrow dinghies. It can turn a less stable boat into an quick sailing platform or into a dive or snorkelling boat or a good fishing boat. No component is heavier than 10lbs and often the small hulls can fit inside the canoe when roofracking.
The plywood “disposable” canoe (see here) has been renamed the more salubrious “Quick Canoe”. I quite liked the name of “Disposable Canoe” but I agreed with the critique that it hinted at something that was poor quality rather than simple and Easy.It has been designed to be as easy to build as possible while keeping some of the qualities of a good paddling canoe – in particular the ability to track.
You can pay money for dry bags to store gear in when canoeing, kayaking or sailing. Or pay even more for buoyancy bags that keep you boat afloat after capsize. Here Ian tells us how we can make our own cheaply.
Some basic questions were asked on my forum about the design of amas. There are so many permutation of ama length, crossbeam width, ama volume with performance ranging from very poor to very good. But what are some of the basic criteria?
Eureka Plywood Canoes are Light and very Pretty. They also paddle well. Standard build comes out around 45 to 50lbs. But weights of around 34lbs have been achieved with care. Stitch and glue method.
A whole bunch of strategies for lightweighting a plywood stitch and glue canoe. In this case a Storer Boat Plans Eureka Canoe. Standard build is around 44lbs. Ten lbs were saved to bring the weight down to 34 or 15k
I am in the Philippines at the moment.I took five days out to go to the area where one of my Australian Filipino friends has her hometown. The general area is Laguna, I was staying at Lumban and nearby was a canoe trip to Pagsanjan falls.I was really interested to see the local boats and to see how they might relate to the timber boats that existed previously. The boats are elegant and very well suited to their environment. Paddling and motor canoes are used on a daily basis.
Csaba Mezai, storerboatplan’s agent in Hungary translated my plans into Magyar (Hungarian). He also runs by far the biggest website in that language – www.hajoepitok.hu which includes a very active forum. It is seven or 8 minutes long looking at the Eureka, discussing the Quick Canoe and OzRacer simple sailboat and discussing the plans are at about […]
The AMAZING steam canoe project. I designed the hullshape and Roger Baker built it. Strip planked with American Oak trim. One of the most striking boats on the Lower Murray River – or anywhere!
BETH sailing canoe is design #1. Light enough to cartop and at home in a club fleet of lasers. Much easier and lighter to set up and sail than a Laser. Really only recommended to experienced dinghy sailors.

I don’t have a car so how can I go canoe touring? Its something I fell in love with in the USA on Lake Powell. This is an idea for a simple, cheap, almost throwaway (or give away) canoe. I can get the materials shipped to somewhere on a river, build the boat over a couple of days then go for a paddle. At the end I can give the boat away or store it for the next part of the trip.
A new plan specifically for an electric trolling motor. 5 to 6mph from a 34lb thrust Minn Kota. This is a purpose designed low power boat for daytrips and fishing. The plans are $30 and many will be able to build the boat for less than $200.
