Sailing and handling the steering and sail together can be confusing. But racing dinghy sailors have some techniques that will make sailing smoother and safer for more leisure oriented sailing. Your hands will be happier and probably your head too!
How do I get nice looking intervals for the inwale spacers on my boat? Photos. How many expensive clamps do I need for the job?
I’ve written about the stupid statements that get put on the net elsewhere. Here someone took the wrong advice “that you can stretch or shrink a boat a percentage” and applied it to one of my Goat Island Skiff plans. It wasn’t OK … the boat was useless after.
How do you rig your Goat Island Skiff or other balance lug rigged boat? This page will be useful for everyone, but specifically assist Goat owners in selection of rope, rope lengths and show all the rigging details. We have also found a number of cheaper ways of doing things from our experience in the Philippines. Halyard, downhaul, outhaul, lashings, rope fittings, rudders, centreboard.
The MSD Rowboat is very pretty, reasonably light and easy to build. The specifications are here but the article also runs through the design process from client consultation including some of the designers missteps before a very nice boat is finalised.
The finally famous Goat Island Skiff is the lightest and simplest 16ft sailing boat I could come up with. Simple to Build with Modern Performance. She will sail well and handle impeccably at all times with 4 adults and is fastest with one or two aboard. Plans are extremely detailed and there is an active community of builders on Facebook.

By far the bulk of Goat Island Skiffs are built as one sail boats. Is the complication, labour and expense of the extra sail on the yawl/ketch option worth it? What types of sailing does it assist or hinder?
Full list of storerboat plans for sail, rowing, paddling, fishing and overnight stays. Plans for most boats are very comprehensive and the boats look just right despite simple construction methods.
Getting rid of a familiar crease in many lugsails.
Year four of the high quality Goat Island Skiff Calendar is out!Boats from the USA, France, Uruguay, The Netherlands and Greece
How to reef a Balance Lugsail. A neat trick of using shock cord (bungee) for the intermediate ties makes it much faster to tie in a reef as well as remove the reef after. it also minimises the risk of damaging the sail if something major breaks elsewhere.
