Comparing Lug and Bermudan Rigs On One Hull Type
Comparing Lug and Bermudan Rigs is usually unscientific and opinion based. Joost has three rigs on his Viola Sailing Canoe. So a less biased comparison

Owner: I am not much interested in racing, but there is no motor mount on this boat, and there never will be. I hate rowing, so the boat has to be able to take me where I want to go under sail. The foils were the first step-this sail completes the journey. :)
The conservative viewpoint is that traditional rigs are not very efficient. However allied to efficient hulls and set up correctly, lug and sprit rigs can be very efficient indeed – not too much slower than “modern” rigs, particularly when the same lessons are applied to trad sails and way cheaper.
This is a WIKI drawn from the group on the Storerboats forum discussions on setting up lug and sprit rigs for best performance building on the information in my webpage.
Joost’s family have been using the Viola 14 Sailing Canoe for the last two years camping, sailing (both he and his wife), paddling since building the plywood canoe from the detailed plans
The Viola 14 is not a normal Sailing Canoe but a sailing dinghy/canoe hybrid from a Boat Plan. Stability of the sailing dinghy with the storage of a canoe and simplified construction. Article by guest writer and Viola 14 prototype builder Joost Engelen.
The simplicity and light weight of a sailing canoe with the hullshape and stability of a good sailing dinghy. Viola is14ft (4.3m) long and 40 inches wide. The hull is rooftopable at 34kg or 75lbs. A few pounds heavier than an RS Aero and much lighter than a Laser. Same as an Opti!
The GIS excels at a competive row and sail event. The Caledonia RAID is one of the oldest events of its type. A competitive multi day event that crosses Scotland from West to East including a crossing of Loch Lomond. It tends to attract long and efficient rowing sailing hulls. And here was one of the shortest, simplest and lightest hulls in the fleet punching well above its weight
Convert many Canoes, Kayaks and Small dinghies into sailboats with the addition of this one drop in rig. It supports both the mast and a leeboard. Everything can be removed except the mast step allowing the boat to remain uncluttered. I profile two owners who have had the same drop in rig on several different boats each. Sails are available too.
Why explained. My most popular design is the Goat Island Skiff a light plywood planing sailing dinghy that is devastatingly fast in most conditions – not so surprising when you realise a lot of the development was because of racing dinghy advances but intended to avoid the skyrocketing costs of sailing participation.
5th Day cruising and boat handling tips. from Genova to Varazze on a homemade dinghy, Goat Island Skiff.
4 Sailing Canoe PLANS. Beautiful and excellent performance. Build from plywood. Or a kit to convert your existing canoe or kayak into an outrigger canoe or simple sailing canoe.
The Viola 14 Sailing Canoe has performance of a light Sailing Dinghy, but the portability and easy transportation of a Canoe.4 sheets of 4mm plywood make economical and keep the weight down to 75lbs. There is a balance lug version which can reef easily and two sizes of a modern Bermudan laminate sail.
“My keel has fallen off” – Ray’s voice on the phone. So he dropped his sails and motored home. He asked me to design a new keel that he could build himself. This article goes through the process of turning a deep keeled boat into a competitive shoal shallow draft boat in a way one builder working by themselves can do.
A Fenwick Williams catboat carefully reinterpreted in Cedar Strip. Includes cleaner structure, optimised foils and a tabernacle rig that allows raising of the mast by one person. Built by David Wilson at Duck Flat Wooden Boats in Adelaide.
The finally famous Goat Island Skiff is the lightest and simplest 16ft sailing boat I could come up with. Simple to Build with Modern Performance. She will sail well and handle impeccably at all times with 4 adults and is fastest with one or two aboard. Plans are extremely detailed and there is an active community of builders on Facebook.

Racing Cancelled. Videos of some high wind and high speed thrills with the simple and cheap to build Oz Goose sail boats. They might look like a box but they they are quick.
John Goodman and I sailed the immaculate Goat Island Skiff he built from my plan in the Texas 200.
The boat showed itself to be one of the faster in the fleet despite loading up such a short boat with food, water and camping gear for six days with little outside support.
We played with sailing the boat by the lee – a method used by racing boats to gain both speed and control.
I document the method here including a video showing how the angle of heel can be controlled using the mainsheet.
More videos of John Goodman’s Yawl Rigged Goat Island Skiff.
He is trying out some rigging variations to see if we can simplify the building of the yawl rig version.
At the moment this is inconclusive, but wow, he got some good videos
