A week fast building two Quick Canoes for touring the Loire in France – Part 1

The above photo was taken on the third day of our Canoeing trip on the Loire River in France. The two black canoes didn’t even exist a week ago. When I wrote the original article on Disposable Canoeing I had no idea at all what it would lead to me and a bunch of adventurers, wine and cheese connoisseurs. Most of us didn’t even know each other! The picture above is the result of this adventurism, but what happened to make it happen? What technology was involved to make the boats faster to build than most stitch and glue boats and what weather conditions did we have to overcome to make it all happen.

Quick Canoe Precut Ply Kits Available in the USA

John Owen Woodworks in the USA is now producing kits for the Quick Canoe 155.This boat is designed to be a real alternative to a basic fibreglass canoe, but will be lighter and usually much cheaper. Some have built one in very few hours.

Jani in Finland converts a Quick Canoe for rowing.

Jani is a friend of Perttu in Finland.Jani wanted a boat for rowing and fishing. He built a Quick Canoe and modified it with outriggers and also worked out a scheme where it can carry one or two people simply by changing the bow.Maybe it is so clever because Jani is an Industrial Designer!

PJ and Cliff build a plywood Quick Canoe for the Tinaroo Raid in one week

Cliff and PJ live in Warm Queensland and Wintry Tasmania. However they both like to go the the yearly (June) wooden boat festival in tropical Far North Queensland. This year they decided to build one of my Quick Canoes. They started on Saturday and finished including putting the canoe on the car roof by the following thursday. They are experienced woodworkers so added some very nice details.

Drop in Outriggers – photo and comments from the Philippines

Finally after many years of selling the plan I have a photo of a boat with the outriggers from the drop-in outrigger plan.Every part of the outrigger is very light. The first one we built had each component under 10lbs.It can make a canoe or kayak into a killer sailing boat. Or can convert a canoe, kayak or suitable dinghy into a stable fishing or diving platform for paddle or outboard.

Quick Canoe Plan Info. Woodworker builds in 4.5 hours (I took 2 weekends)

The plywood “disposable” canoe (see here) has been renamed the more salubrious “Quick Canoe”. I quite liked the name of “Disposable Canoe” but I agreed with the critique that it hinted at something that was poor quality rather than simple and Easy.It has been designed to be as easy to build as possible while keeping some of the qualities of a good paddling canoe – in particular the ability to track.

“Disposable” Canoeing – building a canoe in a few hours.

I don’t have a car so how can I go canoe touring? Its something I fell in love with in the USA on Lake Powell. This is an idea for a simple, cheap, almost throwaway (or give away) canoe. I can get the materials shipped to somewhere on a river, build the boat over a couple of days then go for a paddle. At the end I can give the boat away or store it for the next part of the trip.

The Paddling on the Colorado River continues.

More paddling on Lake Powell, Utah, part of the Colorado River.Remember that I am not a real Canoeist. I have paddled quite a range of different boats at some time or another, I do know basic strokes, I have used canoes to do several day tours (Noosa River, Hawkesbury River) but this trip was to much more remote areas. Closest towns 50 or so kilometres away, we were likely to be pretty well the only people on that area of water after the weekend, we had to carry everything including food as there are no shops.

USA Day 14.5 to 16 – The fleet gathers and heads up Lake Powell and the Colorado River

[Translate] I have already put extensive comments on my flickr gallery. http://www.flickr.com/photos/boatmik/sets/72157622510542194/ So let’s introduce the participants and the boats!  They gathered in the afternoon. People as far away as Texas, California and Australia (me).  Not a huge number, this cruise works well with up to around 12 to 15 boats.  A huge thanks to […]

A really light plywood Eureka Canoe – 34lbs/15.5kg

[Translate] I have just added another page to my site. A couple of keen canoists lightweighted my already light Eureka 155 Canoe. The end result was that this 15ft 6″ boat came in at 34lbs (15.5kg). Note the neat and very lightweight seat made of a washing line. It is important when drilling the holes […]
