MSD Rowboat in Brisbane. Built by Tom
Tom has built his MSD Rowboat in Brisbane.
I met up with him recently and we drove down to the coast towing the rowboat to the river at Nudgee. A bit of wind and a lot of current because of all the rain.
Tom has trimmed down the skeg to get the boat to balance nicely in all directions. Before the modification the bow used to blow around – now it behaves nicely.
I took quite a few pictures.Podcast Online – Wooden Boat Construction by Michael Storer – 2 of 3
This is the second of my talks in the USA. It focuses a bit more on construction and some of the methods that can be used to keep a boat light and simple, but very strong and stiff.
It also discusses how there is a “creep” in boatbuilding and design that increases the weight of boats way over what is really needed for a strong structure.Duckflat Wooden Boats Boatbuilding School Autumn 2009.

At the Duckflat Autumn Boating School Bob Bauze built himself a Eureka Canoe. We used a few methods a bit different from the plan to speed things up and make some fitting work a bit easier. We used fillets on the inside of the boat instead of glass tape. This method adds a bit more read more →Heap of wooden boats being built at the Duckflat Autumn School
I am helping with the teaching in a ten day boatbuilding school in Adelaide Australia. 10 boats 12 students – all off to a flying start. Most are from interstate. Varying levels of skill. Most haven’t built a boat before. A couple have woodwork or home renovation skills. I will post more info here a read more →Second interview up on FurledSails.com
The first part was up last week. This week we talk about traditional vs modern sailtypes – everyone knows I am a fan of trad rigs because of their low cost – but here I go into the influences on the other side. I love the efficiency of modern rigs so I use all the read more →Q&A – Using Snap-Lock Plastic Bags for Epoxy Filleting and Gluing – less mess, less waste
The two methods here save a lot of mess when building boats with epoxy. They also allow accurate and fast placement of mixed epoxy glue. Most supermarkets have varieties of “snap lock” bags. They have a seal across the opening of the bag that can be pressed together with finger pressure. They make it a read more →Finally – building photos for the Goat
During the recent Duck Flat Spring School (I was one of the instructors) a GIS was built by Paul and Chris – who are a pair of old school chums who have a long term plan of building something bigger to share the use of. Duckflat have started work on Kirribilli for a consortium of owners. Keel is off – boat is upside down – hull is half stripped and half splined – starboard side. I’m assisting with the technical side. If the end result is as nice as the work Duck Flat and I did on our last keelboat read more →
