I never had any training but I have been using tools since I was a teenager as my father was a DIY addict!
I remember him building a 10ft sailing dinghy from some magazine plans when I was 7 or 8. I grew up watching him work and build all kinds of stuff.
Later when the Internet “happened” , it was the best thing ever!
I could read, watch and learn so many more things! It was a life changing event for me. I have spent years watching videos.
Necessity is the mother of invention. When I need to overcome some difficulty I try to find a solution based on all I have seen and just using my head a bit. If I had a lot of $$$$ I would just go and buy a powerandwhatnot machine!
As I don’t, I just try to make do with what I have around, preferably from scrap! 😁

How many tools needed? Methods are more important
Some note that Teo doesn’t have a lot of tools. However, he is more about how to get it done without every specialist tool in the book as his videos of boat building demonstrate. That is also the approach of the Goat Island Skiff plans.
- Jigsaw
- Block or #4 handplane
- Cordless drill with clutch (for driving in temporary screws. This means you don’t need clamps as will use temporary drywall/plasterboard screws.
- Random orbit sander. I like the Bosch ones. But don’t lean hard on the handyman ones as you can bend the spindle.
- Couple of screw clamps are useful but not essential plus a half dozen spring clamps
- Beyond that it is pencils, tape measure, rulers, chalk
