speed with an electric trolling motor - simple boat designed specifically goes for family picnic

Joe’s family picnic on the Snohomish – Quick Canoe Electric

What is revolutionary about a day sightseeing? The boat is driven easily at reasonable speed with a small electric trolling motor – some are well under 200 dollars. It doesn’t require a trailer. It comes from three sheets of exterior plywood. Costs are down on every front. And the family is happy! Snohomish Estuary

Philippine Boat Builders and Plywood – aesthetic and sophisticated

Slightly arrogant I! I vist the Philippines then Malaysia and also find a large community of Filipino boat builders there. I find they know much more than me about boat design and varieties. Stunning mix of different boats from curvaceous to plywood and boxy. But Gosh … the shapes they come up with!

Boat designs influenced by rules? History shows us canting keel maxis are stupid

This is an article about how bias in thinking produces weird results in terms of boat designs. I compare a silly boat design trend of 100 years ago with modern canting keel maxi yachts. Personally I don’t think they should be allowed to use engines to run the keels and the various systems – if they do then they should be disqualified from the event results. The conventional human powered boats should be listed as the winners of events.

A week fast building two Quick Canoes for touring the Loire in France – Part 1

The above photo was taken on the third day of our Canoeing trip on the Loire River in France. The two black canoes didn’t even exist a week ago. When I wrote the original article on Disposable Canoeing I had no idea at all what it would lead to me and a bunch of adventurers, wine and cheese connoisseurs. Most of us didn’t even know each other! The picture above is the result of this adventurism, but what happened to make it happen? What technology was involved to make the boats faster to build than most stitch and glue boats and what weather conditions did we have to overcome to make it all happen.

Why do I have an economics graph on my boat building website?

An economics graph on a wooden boat plan website? I am talking about getting out on the water in hard economic times – wooden boats can be very cheap and very, very good. Do a Huck Finn and drift down the Mississippi in a light and simple plywood canoe or sailboat. Adventuring is cheap!

Video of Quick Canoe in Hungary.

A video of the Quick Canoe in action. My Agent in Hungary who sells plans in both English and Hungarian has launched the first Quick Canoe in those parts. It is designed as a very simple and easy to build boat. It is not a perfect high performance boat, but the numbers have been worked out to give good performance despite the simple shape. It won’t be as good as the best fibreglass canoe, but it will be better than many average ones. And much cheaper and lighter.

“All boat design is a compromise” – Rubbish

Reprint of an article I wrote a few years ago for Watercraft magazine in the UK. The article points out why I think most of the discussion about boat design being a “compromise” is rubbish and taking that point of view means that the design is sure to be compromised. What happens if we don’t accept the compromise?

Jani in Finland converts a Quick Canoe for rowing.

Jani is a friend of Perttu in Finland. Jani wanted a boat for rowing and fishing. He built a Quick Canoe and modified it with outriggers and also worked out a scheme where it can carry one or two people simply by changing the bow. Maybe it is so clever because Jani is an Industrial Designer!

The two plywood canoes in my range – How to choose.

This page compares the two plywood canoes in my range. Both have detailed plans and are simple to build. The page is to explain the differences and to help potential builders see if one of the boats suits their needs. Lots of links to pictures, build articles and even videos. The cla

PJ and Cliff build a plywood Quick Canoe for the Tinaroo Raid in one week

Cliff and PJ live in Warm Queensland and Wintry Tasmania. However they both like to go the the yearly (June) wooden boat festival in tropical Far North Queensland. This year they decided to build one of my Quick Canoes. They started on Saturday and finished including putting the canoe on the car roof by the following thursday. They are experienced woodworkers so added some very nice details.
