The Oz Goose is now a fully self contained plan and building is booming. It can hit speeds of 13 knot, is an excellent trainer and teaching boat with three adults aboard or a family sailer with two adults and a bunch of kids. The OzRacer Mk3 has been rebranded as the OzRacer RV. Detailed plan – a boatbuilding course in a book for $20 each. So now racing sailors can use the OzRacer Mk2 and cruising sailors can use the OzRacer RV plan. The RV is no slouch though – it won the World titles in 2010.
The rudderbox design I use has distinct advantages over normal swinging rudder setups. Once you try this design you will never be satisfied with a swinging blade again. But some of the details are important!
This is an article about how bias in thinking produces weird results in terms of boat designs. I compare a silly boat design trend of 100 years ago with modern canting keel maxi yachts. Personally I don’t think they should be allowed to use engines to run the keels and the various systems – if they do then they should be disqualified from the event results. An economics graph on a wooden boat plan website? I am talking about getting out on the water in hard economic times – wooden boats can be very cheap and very, very good. Do a Huck Finn and drift down the Mississippi in a light and simple plywood canoe or sailboat. Adventuring is cheap!

A video of the Quick Canoe in action. My Agent in Hungary who sells plans in both English and Hungarian has launched the first Quick Canoe in those parts. It is designed as a very simple and easy to build boat. It is not a perfect high performance boat, but the numbers have been worked out to give good performance despite the simple shape. It won’t be as good as the best fibreglass canoe, but it will be better than many average ones. And much cheaper and lighter.
