Building a sailboat in a confined space is not untypical, but Ermis in Greece built his Goat Island Skiff on the balcony of a 6th floor apartment and had to employ a very tall crane to lift the boat down.
With two Viola 14 Sailing Canoes recently launched in Hungary the two skippers were filmed dancing around each other spinning like racing dinghies though they are actually are fast and elegant homebuilt plywood sailing canoes built from a boat plan.
The last day of the 20 boat Oz Goose sailboat build brought out the cameras of the TV News as well as the student’s own view of introducing collegiate sailing into the Philippines for around the price of importing two Laser dinghies.
Just back from Butuan, Mindanao, Philippines where the PHBYC group I belong to has helped college students build 10 Oz Goose sailboats to initiate collegiate sailing at the fraction of the cost of commercially available boats.

The Hungarian Wooden Boat group displayed the build of a Viola 14 Sailing Canoe at the annual boat show from a flat pack kit with a complete boat appearing 3 weeks later along with sailing videos.

Peter McKenzie and his sons from Queensland Sunshine Coast built a standard Eureka paddling canoe.
Weight was the standard 44lbs. Peter’s email gives some nice tips.

A whole bunch of strategies for lightweighting a plywood stitch and glue canoe. In this case a Storer Boat Plans Eureka Canoe. Standard build is around 44lbs. Ten lbs were saved to bring the weight down to 34 or 15k
Three times in my life I have gone sailing in small boats without a lifejacket. Two times the boat sank. One time I capsized and found that swimming and trying to get back on the boat is very difficult in FRESH water. Also a hint about how to get kids to wear their lifejackets … wear YOURS!
A boat for an electric trolling motor will go very fast with 2hp. I suggest that smaller power might be good for a cargo canoe, motor canoe. Not to mention the gas saved!
Video – Ian Henehan worked out this 12ft Goose Version and launched it into 20 knot winds. You can check the video to see that this is probably correct. It certainly is, despite the poor camera angle which changes a few times the boat is fairly smoking along

The boat is driven easily at reasonable speed with a small electric trolling motor – some are well under 200 dollars. It doesn’t require a trailer. It comes from three sheets of exterior plywood. Costs are down on every front.

This OzRacer mk2 has a number of changes from the original design, but Bob has pulled it off. The biggest risk is that the windsurfer mast might break because it is not meant to be supported in this way – it is meant to be held up higher by the arms of the sailor.
