Eureka Touring Canoe Review – Scotland

This plywood Eureka canoe has been tried and tested on some of the major lochs in Scotland as a touring canoe and performs extremely well when fully loaded.

It has been used to carry two adults, camping equipment and enough supplies for three days.

It is very stable in the water and you can easily achieve an average rowing speed of 3mph with two people rowing and is quite manoeuvrable even when fully loaded.

The canoe can be easily lifted on to car roof bars by two people and secured by ropes or ratchet straps. Weights are between 36 and 50lbs built to specification).

The canoe was handcrafted and built to plan in 2012 from Duck Boats and Michael Storer design which they have named “The Eureka Canoe”. It is stitch and glue design made from 6mm marine ply and epoxy coated then varnished to fully protect from water penetration.

Overall dimensions are length 15’6” and 34” in beam and weighs approximately 30 kg. The build incorporates two buoyancy compartments at either end and these can be used as stowaway space for canoe touring by unscrewing the inspection covers. Two single paddles come with the canoe.
